ChatGPT dots or Texting not showing or not working? What should I check?
No dot at all? Check your account and workspace, then open chatgpt.com/dots. Plan, region, and rollout can also block it. Dot but no Texting? It’s a limited US Pro beta, and OpenAI says it isn’t available for your account yet.
Checked . Sources are linked below. We haven’t tested this on a phone yet.
You can’t find your dot at all
OpenAI suggests checking your account and workspace, then opening chatgpt.com/dots. After that:
- Plan and region: see which plans include dots and where. OpenAI’s list names Business Premium, so on a Business plan, ask your workspace owner which seat you have.
- Rollout: OpenAI says access may take several days to reach your account, and that you may not see dots right away even on an eligible plan.
- Workspace rules: OpenAI says workspace settings, encryption, and data or inference residency requirements can also affect eligibility.
- App or browser: use the latest ChatGPT mobile app, the desktop app, or a desktop browser. OpenAI says mobile web isn’t supported.
Your dot was there and vanished from one app
OpenAI’s docs don’t cover this one. It comes from people reporting it on OpenAI’s community forum, and we haven’t reproduced it.
- A Business Premium user in Hungary reports that their dot disappeared from the Android app while still working on a computer. Others in that thread report the same, and one says it happened after signing out and back in. A reply says that downloading the latest version didn’t help.
- Another user reports dots missing from the macOS desktop app sidebar while the web version still works.
If this matches what you see, open chatgpt.com/dots in a desktop browser to confirm your dot still exists. Those threads don’t report a fix, so we don’t have one to offer.
Texting isn’t in your dot’s profile
Run the quick check first. It covers plan, region, and age. If you meet the conditions:
- Check the account. If you use more than one ChatGPT account, make sure you’re in the one that owns your dot.
- Try again later. OpenAI’s answer is that texting isn’t available for your account yet. We didn’t find a published timeline.
One Tech Times article says the option may appear in the desktop client first. OpenAI’s Help Center doesn’t list that as a fix, but it’s quick to try, because setup also works in the desktop app or a desktop browser.
Your texts aren’t working
From OpenAI’s setup guide:
- iPhone: turn on iMessage and send from the phone number you verified.
- Android: enable RCS in your messaging app. In Google Messages, go to Settings, then RCS chats. Google says the status should read Connected.
- Both: save your dot’s contact card when you receive it, then send the first message.
OpenAI doesn’t list which Android messaging apps work. Our compatibility table shows what’s confirmed and what’s only reported.
If your dot replied before and has stopped, OpenAI suggests opening the affected task and answering any pending decision, approval, sign-in, or connection request. If your dot is paused, resume it.
You got an automatic reply
You probably sent a plain SMS. OpenAI says SMS isn’t supported and that you may get an automatic reply asking you to use iMessage, RCS, or the ChatGPT app. Your carrier’s SMS rates apply to that message. To switch, follow the steps for your phone in the section above.
Calling your dot’s number doesn’t work
That’s expected. You can only text that number. To call your dot, open its conversation in the ChatGPT mobile app and select the phone button. If calling isn’t working but chat is, you can keep going by typing.
